The Americas is a dual continent comprising North and South America. The settlement of the Americas is characterised by a chequered history spanning 15,000 years, which includes some of the earliest advanced civilisations. This pre-Columbian culture came to an end with Columbus’s discovery in 1492 and the subsequent colonisation.
North America in the strict sense comprises Greenland, Canada, the USA and the majority of Central America. In terms of area, Canada is the second-largest country and the USA the third-largest after Russia.
The USA is the world’s largest economy (GDP) and ranks among the most multicultural countries on earth. 81 per cent of the population live in urban conurbations.
The culture is characterised by the diversity of ethnic influences and traditions.
